Taxable income

Taxable income is the portion of an employee’s earnings that is subject to income tax after applying eligible exemptions, deductions and allowances.

What is taxable income?

Taxable income is the amount of an employee’s income that becomes chargeable to tax after payroll applies the relevant exemptions, deductions and reliefs permitted under the tax rules. It shows how salary components (such as basic pay, allowances, bonuses and perquisites) interact with tax rules.

Payroll teams calculate taxable income throughout the year to determine accurate monthly Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and help employees avoid large adjustments at year-end.

Clear taxable income reporting also supports Form 130 preparation, investment planning and smoother income tax return filing.

Things to know

  • Taxable income can differ depending on whether an employee chooses the old or new tax regime.
  • Many salary components may be taxable — including bonuses, perquisites and some allowances/reimbursements — depending on eligibility and documentation.
  • Under the old regime, exemptions such as HRA and LTA may apply when the employee provides the required declarations or proof (as per policy/process)
  • Payroll teams rely on employee declarations (such as Form 12BB) to update taxable income and adjust TDS during the year.
  • Any mismatch in taxable income can lead to employee queries, rework and possible tax demands or interest during filing.
  • Employees often review taxable income when planning investments or comparing tax regimes.
  • Accurate payroll records help ensure taxable income is reported consistently in Form 16 and other tax-related records.
